| Product Features | This sparking fire sphene weighs 2.35 carats, looks measures 7.910 x 7.280 x 4.650mm, is eye clean with 1 inclusion, is untreated, and has never been set before.The pictures and video dont do this stone justice. In person, it is a classic fire sphene, a rich Amber in color with bright, fiery offshoots of red, green, orange and yellow. It looks duller in photographs, and the inclusion visible under the high magnification pictures I included are invisible to the eye when looking at this stone.Fire sphene is a rare, valuble, but less well known gemstone. It has a "fire", or light dispersion greater than that of diamonds. This is caused by birefringence, or double refraction, meaning that light splits into two rays as it passes through the gem. As a result, the back facets appear as double images, giving the gem a soft, hazy appearance, similar to the doubling seen in zircon.At about a 5 on the mohs scale it is a softer gemstone, and so tends to be used in high end statement pieces not meant for daily wear. The rarest colors are chrome and fire sphene and depending on clarity and size can fetch prices from several hundred dollars to $10k.
